It took a lot of will power for me to skip over Azul-Viva and head into Bam Bou instead but I finally did last weekend. Unfortunately, when it comes down to it I don't think I'll make the same decision again. I had heard a lot of hype about Bam Bou so I may have had big expectations. While the decor is absolutely slamming, that may be the only thing that is here. There is a large communal table in the center of the restaurant but the two sides are a tad too far apart from each other forcing diners to yell across the table to each other ultimately turning up the volume for the entire restaurant. I recommend asking for an individual table when booking a reservation.
Like most new restaurants the service was very slow and frustratingly impersonal. The food also lacked to impress and was pretty standard fare. The fact that I don't really remember what we had a few days after going is a pretty good indication of the impression it left. I will say there is a good wine selection and I enjoyed the setting but with so many restaurants in Shanghai offering the same atmosphere it will be hard to go back. Azul-Viva wins this face-off!
