Albert C.'s Review Of Asset Hotel (4/5)

Paid 550 RMB for 2 nights. Pretty good, no-frills business hotel. Stayed in the standard room, which was rather spacious compared to other "no-frills" Chinese hotels. Has a daily complimentary breakfast that's pretty good. In-room internet works well. Kinda hard to find as it's located down an alley. Hotel staff is friendly and responsive. About a 10-minute walk to either the Shanghai Stadium or Dong'an Road metro stations on Line 4. And about a 15-20 minute walk to the department stores and shopping areas of Xujiahui. Overall, can't beat the price really. I'd recommend this hotel to friends and family.

Albert Chang

Ellen P.'s Review Of Brown Sugar Live House (4/5)

Great place...what a vibe. Definitely a place for good live music. And great music there was, albeit a bit uninspired. So don't expect big time innovative music going on, but great covers of soulful love songs.
Bar staff is great, entertaining and enthusiastic, which makes a whole show by itself. Only down thing is that it's a pretty pricey situation they've got going on...and they ask for service charge! But apart from that, if you like good music in a great atmosphere, go!

Ellen Petit

Sorry, but I wanted to correct the categorisation of this venue. Cotton's is a bar, not a restaurant. Food is limited to pretty simple pub grub. And there is no hotpot that I know of.

But it is a very nice bar and a fine place to hang out if you're wandering the quieter areas of Xuhui district.

Ming Gao

I went to the new House of Blues and Jazz last week, and it was even better than the old one. This just-off-the Bund venue had a classy but hip atmosphere and the crowd is a good mix of local and foreign.

Ming G.'s Review Of Shanghai Marriott Hotel Hongqiao (4/5)

Sorry that this isn't really a review of the hotel, but it's a review of the hotel bar, Champions. Or maybe even more to the point, this is a review of the show at Champions (at the Shanghai Mariott Hotel Hongqiao).

After six years in Shanghai, I had never stopped into Champions for a drink -- because there was no good reason to go there. But seeing Carlton J. Smith belt out the blues can coerce even the biggest nightlife snob into visiting a hotel bar.

Carlton is known in New York as "Soul Brother Number New," and has previously done a few stints in Shanghai at the House of Blues and Jazz, consistently playing to packed houses.

His personalised renditions of Otis Redding standards and Motown covers are presented in his own floor-shaking style. Expect a crowded dance floor filled with locals and foreigners.

While the drinks at Champions are not outrageously priced - RMB 45 for a draft beer -- watch out for the 15% hotel surcharges.

Just tell them Gaoming sent you ;)

Ming Gao

Ellen P.'s Review Of Pasti (3/5)

Pasti has really nice pasta's, I'm especially a fan of their homemade cheese-ravioli. It's a nice, no frills restaurant, where you can get very decent food at okay prices.

I'm not too happy with the service though. I believe in leading by example and I don't think they have a very good example. There's a foreign young man (owner?) running the place and although I think he understands food, he doesn't very much understand service. He has never approached us to say hi, although amongst the group of my friends we come (came) here quite often. Once we asked to sit on one of the couches with the big table, where he was sitting and we were granted the seat, but not without a lot of frowns from his side. At that point they ran out of bread (how an Italian restaurant runs out of bread is beyond me) and they were not able to get us anything else. Bread is essential and also available. Furthermore, there are bread sticks, pizza dough and lot of other things at hand to replace bread.

But again, go there, have a nice pasta and don't expect too much, you'll be very satisfied.

Ellen Petit

Ellen P.'s Review Of Simply Thai (2/5)

Although initially impressed, after coming back a few times, it kinda wore down.
I'm talking about all Simply Thai restaurants by the way. It's all just not quite it. Although I don't agree with previous posters that service is slow, I do think it's not very friendly. Food is okay at best, with the Basil Chicken being dry some times, and the simosa left in the deep fry(er) (ing pan) way too long.
One night I came in rather late, together with a friend and we asked if we could still have dinner (it was a little after 9:30). They said no problem and seated us. We ordered a drink and rushed into ordering food, because we realized it was late already and didn't want to keep them late. We got our drinks and a few of our dishes, when the waiter comes with the cheque. He literally puts the check on the table and asks us to pay while our food was not complete!! We asked if we could at least have one more drink, which was possible, but only if we ordered now. We then didn't feel like paying before all the food arrived. So there we were, with a table full of food, only one helping of rice, 2 beverages each, a bill and no chance at dessert or tea.

Because I found the food mediocre to begin with, I decided to not go back there after this experience. Mind you, if they just would've told us from the beginning: sorry, we'll be closing soon, or you can order, but kitchen closes at so and so late, we would've known and it was up to us whether we would've decided to eat there. We were not the only tables rushed out by the way and everyone kinda stood outside looking at eachother thinking: what just happened??

If you want Thai food, I'm sure there are better alternatives than Simply Thai.

Ellen Petit

Ellen P.'s Review Of House of Blues and Jazz (5/5)

***note, this place has moved to Fuzhou Lu, Sichuan Lu***

Perfect. Just perfect. Great performers, musician with a passion for good music and entertaining. Their band changes every 3 months or so, and it's a bit different every time. Musicians from New Orleans to Japan are playing there and I find it inspirational.
Good drinks, although expensive, but you're not paying for the entertainment. It's mostly foreigners complaining about this and I always remind them: back home the drinks would've been cheaper but you'd pay crazy money just to get in! At least here you can go in for free and make it as expensive as you'd like it to be.

Big pro is that I alwasy feel very comfortable to go in by myself. You'll always find someone to talk to and everyone is just there to enjoy the music. Crowd is usually a bit older which makes it so much more laidback and so much less of a who-is-who. Owned by the ever charming Dong Fu Lin, it's a charming place. And Dong Fu definitely adds to this charm, with his stylish dressing style and charming personality. A true gentleman, who makes you wonder about the 1930's in Shanghai...

Ellen Petit

Ellen P.'s Review Of Blue Frog (4/5)

The oldest (as far as I know) in the club of Blue Frogs, I come here whenever I crave a good, filling brunch (which is pretty much every week.
Their Smoked Salmon Benedict is just perfect and what's even more important, it's consistant. It's not that difficult to serve good food, it's a lot more difficult to serve good fine time after time, and Blue Frog really knows how to do so.

Why I'm so fond of this location is that it's on Mao Ming Lu. The whole street is so tranquil, with this air of faded glory, I just love it. Hate to see that they're tearing everything down, just in order to put down another appartment building, or so I assume. Furthermore, the lounging area on the 2nd floor is the best and their staff is so welcoming and well-trained.

If we're talking about a comforting place, we're talking about Blue Frog Mao Ming, no doubt.

Ellen Petit

Ellen P.'s Review Of KABB (2/5)

Although I can't do anything else but agree with the 2 previously written posts, that doesn't make it worth more than 2 stars for me. Yes, the food is reliable, but very overpriced and very, very non-creative. Yes, service is good, but on the verge of being invasive. Yes, you can sit outside, but do you really want to be in the middle of hurds of tourists being led around by their guide, while wearing matching yellow hats?

There isn't a reason in the world why I would recommend this restaurant to you, simply because it's one in a dozen and in it's dozen it's not the best, not the nicest, not the tastiest and not the friendliest.

Ellen Petit

Ellen P.'s Review Of Manifesto (4/5)

Best bloody mary in town! I find myself going back here a lot on Sunday afternoons, especially in summer, when you can relax on their rooftop terrace and watch life go by on Julu Lu. With the comforting smell of the BBQ burning in the back, it's like an ideal summer Sunday afternoon.
The tapas, although having nothing to do with Spanish food, are great. The baby burgers are perfect and the goat cheese on toast are to die for. I have never tried anything from the BBQ, but I've seen the pricing and the portions that come by, and that all seems very reasonable to me.

One thing that they could improve is their consistency. Although I'm in love with their bloody mary's (and believe me, a good bloody mary is bloody hard to find!) they're never the same. But let that not stop you to go there and check their Sunday afternoons out!

Ellen Petit

Wait! There's hope for Mexico Lindo
1. They've relocated to the Hongmei Lu pedestrian street, near the Blue Frog and the new Big Bamboo
2. More importantly, they've hired a new chef and retrained their staff. The chef, Eric Brown, formerly of Finestre (aka the restaurant at Attica) is from San Diego and seems to know his tacos from his burritos.
Yesterday was the first day for the new menu, and my beef burrito hit the spot. My buddy's chicken tacos were pretty strong as well. The outdoor seating provided quality people-watching too, so you might want to give Mexico Lindo another chance.

Located in the heart of Hongqiao, Shanghai upscale business district, my expenience in Renaissance Yangtze Shanghai Hotel just like my home away from home, their warm and savvy service really hold my love, just merely a walk away from top exhibition centers and close to major national and international corporations, it also close to some shopping area which is so convenience for both business and leisure trip.

I also tried their restaurants coz I was stay theere for longer than a month, with 5 award-winning restaurants and 2 lounges, gastronomic temptations ranging from classical Chinese cuisine to modern Western fusion, I really loved the Dynasty Chinese restaurant, it is very Traditional Cantonese taste and feel.

below are some highlight copy from their website
- Great location in upscale trade/residential area next to major highways.Easy access to local airport
- Unique inviting surroundings with 5 great restaurants, 2 lounges with live music, and cozy rooms
- Crisp and savvy service by attentive, English-speaking associates who will make you feel at home.

My prayers have been answered! Good Mexican food has finally arrived in Shanghai! On our recent visit to Maya, we wolfed down the guacamole, ceviche, fish tacos and empanadas. The chicken tamales left us a little disappointed, but we were too busy licking the guacamole bowl to dwell on the dry tamale. We didn't bother ordering any of the entrees, since the appetizers were so delicious and very reasonable. Even the margaritas tasted authentic.
Anyone who has been to a Japanese restaurant with me knows that I am always looking for good soba noodles. So, when I heard about Bankura, I couldn't wait to check it out! The fresh soba noodles were actually a tad too soft. for me. So, why the five hearts? Well, everything else was outstanding! The sesame-crusted mackerel was a perfect blend of crispy sesame and rich mackerel. The fried chicken was mouth-watering, the vegetable tempura expertly battered and fried, and the onigiri was devoured even though it was piping hot! And the best part of Bankura is that we ate all of this and more without breaking the bank. If you are gluttonous like me, it will cost you around 100RMB. If you have a normal appetite, it should not cost more than 70RMB. For lunch, the specials are only 38RMB. For all of these reasons, Bankura has quickly become a favorite among Japanese expats, so be sure to make a reservation in advance!

Xiaodi Zhang

xiaodi z.'s Review Of Issimo (4/5)

When it comes to stylish restaurants in Shanghai, I have had too many disappointments that I've come to equate "stylish" with "bland" or much worse. So, when I heard a friend describe Issimo as "stylish", I couldn't help but be a little skeptical. After three attempts to find something suspicious, I am very happy to report that I have only uncovered really delicious Italian food. Actually, the grilled squid was a little tough, but I am not complaining. The rocket salad was excellent, so was the bruschetta, gnochi, clam pasta, sea bass and pizza. I also loved the different portions you can choose for the appetizers and pasta, which was perfect for family style dining. It also lived up to its "stylish" reputation. Issimo is one of the few restaurants that features both great food and glitzy design. The only real complaint is with the stiff wait staff. I hope with time, they will loosen up a little and smile a little more.

Xiaodi Zhang

Ming G.'s Review Of Maya (4/5)

I just tried Maya yesterday, and I will definitely be going back.
This haute-Mexican hide-away serves creative Latin American flavours and is aimed at a higher level market than the Tex-Mex places scattered around Shanghai.
The taco salad, while crippled a bit by name that rings of high school cafeterias, is a tangy melange of fresh chicken, lime, and tamarind that reminds me as much of SE Asian cuisine as it does Mexico. Expect to pay about RMB 200/pax exclusive of drinks.
With chef Brad Turley, formerly of Maneo, 239 and New Heights running the kitchen, the dishes were consistent winners. Maya is owned and managed by the Cosmo Group which also owns Casanova and Velvet Lounge.
We're still in the soft opening, so the owners are out there waiting table as this 60-seat place was hopping on Tuesday night.
Look for a well-heeled collection of the international set, but you may have to look hard as Maya is tucked away inside the grounds of an apartment complex on Julu Lu.

Ming Gao

Finally had the chance to try Casa 13, and I can't wait to go back again. Tucked away in a small alley in the French Concession, Casa 13 is housed in a remodeled Spanish-style villa with a beautiful courtyard. Once inside, you immediately feel a sense of calm and warmth, as if you are visiting an old friend's house. While the location is certainly charming a reason to go back, the food is definitely the main attraction here. The menu features a "Best Tomato Salad", so we had to try it, and it actually delivered! Honestly, I think it was the best tomato salad I have ever had. My Casa omelette was a little too well-cooked, but the overall flavor was yummy. For dessert, we tried the cinnamon spiced creme brulee, and it was close to being divine. Given the cozy atmosphere and the great food, Casa 13 is one of my new favorites.

Xiaodi Zhang

There are many Italian restaurants in Shanghai, and a surprising number of them are quite good. None of them, however, are quite like Da Papa' Mario. You wont find a fancy bar, baroque decor, or an extensive drink menu. Light on the design touches, to the point of almost bare, the restaurant solely focuses its attention on the food, and I couldn't be more thankful. The pizzas and calzones are top-notch, and the portion size is unbelievable given the affordable prices.
xiaodi z.'s Review Of Qimin Organic Hotpot (2/5)

Fresh, quality ingredients are so important for Chinese hotpot. So, when we heard about a new organic hotpot restaurant featuring organic vegetables, Japanese pork and free-range chicken, we were really excited to check it out.

Our first impression was very positive. The design and decor were both top-rate. Filled with hungry customers on a late Tuesday night, it looked like business was doing great. Once seated, we immediately got service. The menu, however, was pretty confusing. It several set menu options. Since we wanted a bigger selection, we ordered everything a la carte. When the waitress warned the portions are quite small, we ordered the lamb, Japanese pork, and the free-range chicken, along with a lot of vegetables, pork dumplings and fish balls. I know that sounds gluttonous, but this is what we usually order at other hotpot restaurants.

Unfortunately, the fresh, organic ingredients fell far short of our expectations. The pork was slicked against the grain, and too thick, so it was really tough. The lamb was gamy. I could only eat one piece. The fish balls were crunchy! Believe me, they are NOT supposed to be crunchy. We did like the mushrooms, but they were not any better or worse than what you could find at other hotpot restaurants in China.

And then, we got the bill.... At 300RMB/person, this was the most expensive hotpot meal that we have ever had, even more expensive than shabu-shabu meals in Japan. Given the quality of the ingredients, the bill was ridiculous. It is so infuriating when a restaurant focuses too much on design and not enough on the actual food itself. Unfortunately, Shanghai just got another one....

Xiaodi Zhang

xiaodi z.'s Review Of Mexico Lindo (2/5)

I lived in Texas for ten years followed by seven years in California. So, I LOVE Mexican food, and I have been craving it ever since I moved to Shanghai. When I heard that Mexico Lindo is one of the best in town, I couldnt wait to try it. Unfortunately, it was a very disappointing experience. First, the guacamole was too sour (too much lemon juice). The fajitas plate was not sizzling, and it was over-seasoned and over-cooked. The fish tacos looked more like fish stew. The only highlight of the meal was the corn tortillas, but we had to pay extra for a second batch. Even without drinks, we ended up spending 320RMB for two people. I still have hope there is a good Mexican restaurant in Shanghai, but Mexico Lindo is definitely not it.

One caveat is that the margaritas are supposed to be quite good there, and the downstairs bar area looks like a great place for happy hour.

Xiaodi Zhang

xiaodi z.'s Review Of Arugula (2/5)

Arugula has been around for awhile, and the name always intrigued me. With such a great name, how could the food be anything but yummy? Unfortunately, the name outshines the food and the service at Arugula. Even though we were one of only two tables, we waited a long time to get any type of service. The menu offered a very limited selection of stuff you could find just about anywhere else. When my omelet finally arrived, the side of potatoes was cold. While I have had worse food in Shanghai, I have never had cold potatoes at brunch. To me, thats unacceptable. With so many other options in Shanghai, I am not planning to go back to Arugula any time soon.

Xiaodi Zhang

Tapas are good though a bit on the oily/heavy side. Service was pleasant (even though totally disorganised).
xiaodi z.'s Review Of Ester's Bear (4/5)

Allen has been trying to drag me to this restaurant for weeks, but whenever we walked by, I just couldnt take it seriously. The first floor of this restaurant is a teddy bear store! And not just any teddy bear store, it calls itself a "teddy bear museum". Apparently, the owner is a life-long teddy bear collector, so the store features most of her collection along with "DIY" bears that you can customize for yourself. So, you cant blame me for being weary of the food.

Well, Allen finally convinced me today, and we checked it out with a friend from Beijing. We ordered a variety of Thai staples, including Papaya Salad, Red Curry Chicken, Basil Pork, Pad Thai, and Morning Glory. The papaya salad came out first, and we were pleasantly surprised by its authenticity and flavor. Perfectly crisp and seasoned, the papaya still had a nice crunch and tasted very fresh. Next came the curry, and everyone couldn't stop going for seconds, thirds, etc.... Every dish that followed was equally impressive, but my favorite was probably the Pad Thai. At a lot of Thai restaurants in Shanghai, this dish commonly errors on the side of being too greasy. The Pad Thai at Ester's tasted pretty close to the noodles we had in Thailand. Not greasy, not too spicy, and like everything else we tried, the Pad Thai was a great blend of flavors that didn't overpower the dish. On top of the great food, the bear-themed decor is so consistent throughout the store that you can't help but smile at the quirkiness and respect the owners for being true to all their passions.

xiaodi z.'s Review Of Ci5 (4/5)

How many places offers a great selection of Champagne and whiskey alongside soba noodles?! If you are ever craving for that combination, Ci5 is the place to go. I stumbled upon it one night, and fell in love instantly. Its one of the few bars in Shanghai that prefers to be hidden and quiet. It doesnt fit more than 20 people, and it's perfectly happy that way. The menu is a reflection of that same attitude. Everything is made to perfection, even the soba noodles. As it turns out, Ci5 is Japanese owned and operated, and luckily for me, it takes its soba seriously. So, even for a homebody non-alcoholic drinker like me, I have found a bar I can love. Go there on a date or with close friends for an evening of catching up and getting to know someone.

Xiaodi Zhang

xiaodi z.'s Review Of Good Times Indian Cafe (4/5)

While there are a lot of Indian options in Shanghai, none are quite like Good Times. Come to think of it, I have never been to any Indian restaurant anywhere quite like Good Times. For starters, the interior design completely threw me off. For a second, I had flashbacks to all of those home-style dinners I used to go to back in Texas and Alabama. The walls are painted bright yellow, with matching tables and chairs. The wall decorations are reproduced paintingsof old food labels, stuff you'd find at any flea market in the US. I asked the owner if the restaurant design was intentional or inherited, and he resoundingly replied that it was intentional. As it turns out, this design can also be found in India, and it is supposed to recapture the Raj days.

Much like the design, the menu is also a little quirky but it doesnt take itself seriously either. Printed like a newspaper, the menu items are displayed where the ads would typically appear. For all this effort they put into the design and presentation, you might question how much effort they put into the food. Luckily, the food has never disappointed and I have been going back repeatedly. For starters, their dosas are some the best I have ever had. Crepe-like, but better, the dosas are stuffed with a variety of goodies. We usually order the Masala Dosas. For the main entry, I love all the curries I have tried there, and I have also discovered some Southern Indian specialties. The staff is also super friendly, so feel free to ask their for recommendations. The only items on the menu that we havn't loved are the ones that you shouldnt order at an Indian restaurant anyway, like the fish and chips and the burger.

Xiaodi Zhang

xiaodi z.'s Review Of Shui Urban Spa (5/5)

There are too many massage/spa facilities to count in Shanghai, but they typically fall into one of two categories. On the one end of the spectrum, there are those spas located w/in five-star hotels, the ones that are over-priced, darkly lit, heavily scented, and all around too serious and too expensive for a monthly spa treatment. On the other hand, you will find countless mid-range facilities that look and feel more like factories than spas. Luckily, Shui has created something different, contemporary design, comfortable setting, and the best masseuses in town. For ~500RMB, the treatments are not cheap, but they are not as expensive as comparable treatments at those 5-star hotels. Unlike those stuffy establishments, Shui treatments are worth every kuai.

Xiaodi Zhang

Nicole L.'s Review Of Bam Bou (3/5)

It took a lot of will power for me to skip over Azul-Viva and head into Bam Bou instead but I finally did last weekend. Unfortunately, when it comes down to it I don't think I'll make the same decision again. I had heard a lot of hype about Bam Bou so I may have had big expectations. While the decor is absolutely slamming, that may be the only thing that is here. There is a large communal table in the center of the restaurant but the two sides are a tad too far apart from each other forcing diners to yell across the table to each other ultimately turning up the volume for the entire restaurant. I recommend asking for an individual table when booking a reservation.

Like most new restaurants the service was very slow and frustratingly impersonal. The food also lacked to impress and was pretty standard fare. The fact that I don't really remember what we had a few days after going is a pretty good indication of the impression it left. I will say there is a good wine selection and I enjoyed the setting but with so many restaurants in Shanghai offering the same atmosphere it will be hard to go back. Azul-Viva wins this face-off!

Nicole Legacki

Ferguson Lane is one of those great spots you find while strolling the quieter streets of the French Concession. I probably would have never found it had I not been with a friend in the know. Ferguson Lane is a small former hospital complex that was gutted and outfitted with with cafes, a wine bar, a few art galleries, craft shops, a spa and the restaurant Franck. With plenty of outdoor space and tucked away from busy Shanghai streets it is a nice place to spend a lazy afternoon getting a coffee and checking out the various art and photography galleries.

It does lose a star for the stark appearance of the complex and lack of any sort of charm but with plenty of that to go around in Shanghai, you won't miss out for the occasional afternoon at Ferguson Lane.

Nicole Legacki

I have been there for dinner a few times. It is an upscale French bistrot that could be located in downtown New York...but it is in Wukang lu in Shanghai! The food is traditional French but really good and always with a modern touch that makes the difference, always fresh, MSG free and beautiful to look at too. The wine list is very French as one would expect but the Chef: Franck picks his wines as carefully as the ingredients for his dishes so no matter what you order it is very good. The cheese was top quality, the duck was perfectly cooked, the meat cuts (charcuterie) is the best one can find in China. The atmosphere is a hit with every guest I took there, the service is pleasant and waiters are really trying their best to be helpful under the caring eye of a top restaurant manager.
The wine list is a bit short to my taste since I go there at least twice a month, I end up always drinking the same wines. They could widen the price range of wines they offer and it would then be the ideal Chinese restaurant in Shanghai: good, cool, trendy, pleasant: a 100% guarantee for a great night!

Aline Conus

Unassumingly tucked away inside a serviced apartment, Tian Jia specializes in Toro, or fatty tuna, and offers three grades of Toro, including regular Toro, O-Toro, and Chu-Toro. For first time patrons, I would recommend their tasting menu which offers a variety of sushi, toro shabu shabu, and crab hot-pot.
Cafe Dan is probably the hardest cafe to find in Tian Zi Fang, but it is well worth the effort. All the coffee beans are freshly roasted in the store, and each cup of coffee is hand brewed. The design of the cafe is also another reason to check out Cafe Dan. The staircase is so steep that it helps not to look down. Once you have made it to the second floor, you are treated with several seating options: comfortable chairs on the 2nd floor, a private room on the side, and a loft area big enough for 4 people. Aside from the coffees, I highly recommend the Japanese small plates, especially the soups and the pastas.

Xiaodi Zhang
